History Of Fishing – We All Started In The Water!

When you are on your next fishing trip and drop your hook line and sinker into the water take some time to contemplate how this relaxing water sport came into being while you wait for the fish to bite. But beware not to drown too deep into history and miss a few good nibbles on the lure!

Like all things alive today, the sport of fishing started in the water too. Before man learnt to use a hook line and sinker he used to dive in and manually try to grab hold of a fish near the surface. This being quite a tedious task he decided to experiment and try to catch fish in different ways.

The sport of fishing is perhaps the oldest of sporting activities in the world. It has been taken up merely for the fun, sporting spirit and of course food the sport provides. Historical records show depictions of ancient deposits of bone, shell and paintings on the walls of caves depicting early man fishing in waters and catching fish. This activity was definitely indulged in for food rather than sport. However, the idea soon caught on and man began fishing for the fun of it all.

The waters of the ancient Nile are an angler’s paradise and have been since time immemorial. The staple diet of the Egyptians was fish, fresh and dried. They have been responsible for developing the many methods of fishing that are still in vogue even today. The Egyptians were a very technically advanced civilization and they were known to use hooks, lines, traps and nets to catch their fish. Though they managed well enough to catch the fish they still resorted to the ancient method of clubbing the fish to death. The popular catches were catfish, eels and perch.

It is probably the Eskimos and red Indians who actually invented the modern fishing tactics. They were the ones who also discovered the methods of ice fishing and fishing out of boats. Meanwhile, the civilization of Greece is also known to have contributed to the history of fishing. Though they were not particularly fond of the activity they is evidence that the Greeks indulged in the sport of fishing as there is a cine cup from as far back as 500 BC depicting a boy near a stream with a fishing rod and tackle. There is also evidence of fishing from the Roman era. The Romans fished with nets and off the side of the boats using tridents.

The most recognizable form of fishing is using the fishing hook. The is no evidence to prove the theory but it is believed that prehistoric man discovered the use of the fishing hook over 40,000 years ago. This is perhaps the most exciting and easiest form of fishing ever developed. It is also, perhaps, the device that turned fishing into a sport.

With such a long standing relation with the water sport it is not wonder that over half the world’s sports men are inclined to take to the sport of fishing if for nothing else but the relaxation of it all.

How to Find an Aquatic Sports Summer Camp

What’s the best way for your child to be safe, have fun and beat the summer heat? Sign them up for a water sports or aquatic camp!

Summertime and aquatic activities go hand-in-hand. According to Theresa Torrone, a volunteer for the American Camp Association (ACA), “Water sports camps are one of the fastest growing segments of the specialty camp field within the summer camp industry as a whole. There’s a water sports camp for kids and teens everywhere.”

Also known as aquatics sports camps, water sports camps generally offer surfing, jet skiing, wakeboarding, boogie boarding, body surfing, parasailing, swimming, inner-tubing, kayaking, canoeing, fishing, boating and related activities.

What if your child doesn’t have previous experience with these activities? Torrone says not to worry. “Most water sports camps accept kids from every aquatic background, so your child can participate and enjoy the activities safely and have fun no matter what.”

To cover your bets, however, Torrone says to “always check with the camp director first just to be sure.”

Sometimes parents think a water sports camp is out of the question if they don’t live close to the ocean. But Torrone says your kids can still get the full benefit of attending a water sports camp no matter where you live.

“Some of the premier water sports camps in the country use lakes, reservoirs and pools as their primary activity base. The ocean is fun, but it’s definitely not essential to enjoying a premier aquatic camp experience.

“For example, jet skiing, wakeboarding and fishing camps often take place at lakes or rivers. They don’t require a beach or ocean for kids to have fun.”

When asked about surfing camps, Torrone said, “I suppose if you want to learn to surf, or attend a surf camp, you’ll need to find a water sports camp at the beach. But even if you don’t live by the beach, you can go to an overnight surf camp. There are a number of them across the country.”

To find a list of water sports camps, Torrone suggests contacting the American Camp ACA. “The ACA’s a great resource. Whether you’re looking for a surf camp, jet skiing camp, wakeboarding camp, or just a swimming camp, the ACA can provide you with a list of accredited programs all over the country.”

Torrone says you can also look on the Internet. “If you want a surf camp, SurfCampSearch.com, a free online surf camp directory. If you want an all around aquatic sports camp experience, including surfing, try Aloha Beach Camp in Los Angeles. And last I checked, ussportscamps.com and localsportscamps.com also have comprehensive listings of water sports camps everywhere so you can find a great program.”

Whatever camp you choose, it’s always wise to involve your child in the decision-making process. “If your child is involved in picking the water sports camp they’ll eventually attend,” she said, “they’re going to end up loving it that much more.”

Keeping your swimming heated can cost a pretty penny – especially these days when we are all looking to cut our energy costs and leave less of a carbon footprint. The following guide will explain how affordable solar pool covers can go a long way in doing just that. It will also outline the available design features they come in, so that you can make the most of a cover’s solar heating potential.

Introduction to Solar Swimming Pool Covers
Also referred to as solar blankets, these types of pool covers are an economical and effective way to use the sun’s energy to heat your swimming pool.

Generally resembling bubble wrap, solar pool covers are either clear, silver or blue in colour. They’re comprised of thousands of tiny air pockets that transfer heat from the sun into the swimming pool and also trap the existing heat in the water. This means that more heat is added to your swimming pool while less heat is prevented from evaporating. All in all, you will not be losing nearly as much heat and thus you will not have to run your swimming pool heating system as much as before.

You can in fact increase the temperature of your swimming pool by 10 to 15 degrees Fahrenheit by using swimming pool solar covers. Also, reduced evaporation means less chemical loss which, in turn, results in you needing to spend much less money on replacement chemicals.

The Different Types of Swimming Pool Solar Covers
While all pool solar covers do the job in providing savings on your heating system and reducing evaporation as described above, not all solar blankets are the same in design or effectiveness.

Thickness
Swimming pool covers come in different grades of thicknesses. While choosing a thicker one will cost you more, ultimately it will also offer more energy savings because it will provide greater heat transference and insulation as well as extra durability to make it last longer. To give you an idea on this, the most common solar swimming pool covers are 8 mm, 12 mm and 16 mm.

Colour
Colour is also an important factor in the effectiveness of solar pool covers for swimming pools because while all covers prevent more or less the same amount of water and chemical evaporation, they do not all offer equal heat transfer in terms of capturing the sun’s solar energy. Blue swimming pool solar covers tends to be the most popular choice, however it is clear covers that block the least amount of sun and thus offer the most amount of solar heating. The figures prove this – blue covers normally block about 20 and 40 per cent of the sun’s solar energy while clear solar blankets only block somewhere between 5 to 15 per cent of the sun’s energy. For the most enhanced heating ability, you would have to go for solar pool covers with a silver coating as they reflect added heat back into the swimming pool.

Choosing the Right Cover for Your Swimming Pool
The type of swimming pool you own also plays a vital role in which type of solar cover will best be suited to your needs. Firstly, the type of solar pool cover you would use depends largely on the shape and size of your swimming pool. If you have a standard rectangular or round swimming pool, it should be no problem to find the right cover fit to match its exact dimensions. If however you have a kidney-shaped, oval or custom-shaped pool, chances are you will have to have a cover designed to fit its individual measurements. The good news is that this can be done easily – most solar pool covers can simply be cut with scissors to fit your pool, so you will merely need to buy a cover that is big enough to cover the entire pool and then shape it yourself to snugly fit the pool’s shape.

Secondly, do you have an above ground pool or an in-ground pool? While this factor is less important with regards to the actual cover, it plays a vital role in the type of reel you would use to unroll it. Solar pool reels for in-ground swimming pools normally have wheels so they can be moved around on the pool deck without any fuss. When it comes to above ground pools however, the reels are typically designed to be mounted to your pool’s top rail.

Conclusion
Swimming pool covers bring the benefits of reduced heating and chemical costs, lowered water evaporation rates plus an extended swimming season. Since they are also highly affordable, they’re highly recommended as an effective energy saver for all swimming pool owners.

In present times, each and every person is very much in tension because of the workload and job pressure. There is an instant need to lower this pressure otherwise everybody will be bored of the work they do. Consequently the quality of the work is going to be ruined. The best way to lower this pressure is either go for vacations or water sport for adventurous people water sport is the best way to relax. For children, water sports have always been adventurous and filled with fun. But in any case, safety should be at priority. All children should wear safety gear, even if they claim to know to swim. All rafts and boats should also have extra lifebuoys, whistles and life jacket. If people love being on the water, and want to get those close to you out there with you, people need to play water games with the utmost safety.

There are various water sports for the family which should help people find some activities to bring everyone together and get them out on the water with a happy mood. Since water makes up a large part of the earth, it’s not a big thing that many people like being in and around the water. Activities in the water aren’t simply cool and relaxing. There are also some intense sports such as water rafting. Beaches are the safest place to gather and do all the fun along with all the water sports.

It can be hard, with busy everyday lives, to keep a family together and bonded. Vacations are a great opportunity to work on the relationships and bringing everyone back together unless everyone ends up doing their own thing. If people set off with specific group activities which they already have in mind, like some of the family water sports, people will be able to work things out together on this activity of playing water sports and accomplish something together. One of such places is Panama beaches where people can go and enjoy with their families.

Many people who are very active have found a workout routine that works the best for them. Most try running or jogging out first because it is one of the easiest ways to get a great work out. All you need is a pair of sneaker or tennis shoes and a place to run. Most people choose a path through their neighbor or college campus. Several inexpensive devices are available that will help you track your rate and mileage so that you know your limits and you can plan your running work-outs in order to achieve the health goals you have. Although running is one of the most cost-effective ways to get a great workout in, it can be extremely hard on your joints. Your body craves a long soak in the bathtub because it helps relax your muscles after pounding the pavement for an hour.

Although running is the first choice for most, you can achieve the same health benefits if you take up swimming! Not only is the sport as challenging, if not more so, then running, it is also much better for your joints. Whether you decide to use is as a warm-up or cool down to your land based routine or as your main workout, you will definitely notice the benefits of swimming within a few weeks. Not only is it wonderful for your physical fitness, swimming is also great for your mental health. If you just allow your thoughts to wander as you get into a rhythmic stroke, you feel completely refreshed when you step out of the pool.

If you put time into training your body for joint-easy exercises now, you may never have to look into buying walk in bathtubs! These specialty tubs are great for those who have trouble swinging their legs up and over the side in order to take a bath; but if you keep your bones strong and your joints healthy, then you will never have the need for one of these bathtubs.

Look into swimming or water-based activities to see if they would be a good addition or substitution to your normal workout routine.

The 10 Most Dangerous Parts of Your Swimming Pool

In the back of their minds, all swimming pool owners know the risk of having a silent, lurking body of water in the back yard. Even more so for families with children, a swimming pool can be a silent killer. Consider this top ten list of the most common, and most dangerous swimming pool deficiencies:

10) Electrical

Proper electrical wiring for a swimming pool and all its components is critical since water, electricity and people are a dangerous mix. Swimming pools, and all metal components within one meter of the water line should be bonded with a heavy ground wire loop. Additionally all electrical devices that come into close contact with water such as pumps and lights must be properly connected with a GFIC or ground fault interrupter.

9) Slippery Decks

As swimming pool deck surfaces age and weather they will develop algae and become very slippery, especially in wet conditions. To reduce the likelihood of falling or slipping on a pool deck, you should pressure wash your deck yearly. Additionally a silica sand can be added to your concrete sealer to provide a more textured and slip resistant surface.

Ladders & Stairs

Stairs and ladders are a very common place for injury in a swimming pool. Coloured nosing tile is used to accentuate step edges in many pools, which helps to define the step edges under the moving water. The likelihood for a fall or injury increases at night, and also even more so if there is no underwater swimming pool light to illuminate the water. Ladders often have hand rails installed into the pool deck which can become loose over time. If the ladder rails shift as you are climbing out of the water, this will greatly increase the risk of a fall.

7) Water Quality

Do not underestimate your green swimming pool. Harmful bacteria can reside in poorly maintained water. It is critical to ensure that the water quality is suitable for swimming to prevent infections and staph infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat. Chemical levels in the water can also affect those prone to skin reactions.

6) Chemical Storage

Your swimming pool chemicals are a potent mix of strong acids, alkalines and poisons. Even worse is that many of these chemicals specifically react with one another, yet they are often stored in the same location with little effort to keep them safe. Chemicals should be researched and stored in a controlled, dry and locked location at all times.

5) Pool Winter Covers

Winterization covers are often just large tarps stretched over the pool with sand or water bags pinning them down at the edges. These are not strong enough to support the weight of a medium pet or small child without pulling into the pool. They can look tempting to walk on, but any person or animal that walks out onto a swimming pool winter cover is in serious jeopardy.

4) Suction Lines

The swimming pool suction points, most commonly the skimmer and the main drain are directly connected to the front of powerful swimming pool pumps. The power of a pool pump is more than enough the cause sever and life threatening injury. The warning label that comes on new main drains, skimmers and pool pumps states that the pool pump has enough force to trap, drown and disembowel you should you unwittingly cover the suction point with any part of your body. Tragically every year more children are killed this way from single suction main drains which are now illegal. Dual suction main drains spaced apart are now required so that you can not cover both suction points at the same time. Proper use of main drain lids is critical to ensure the safety of your swimmers.

3) Pool Toys

A surprisingly common source for swimming pool related accidents is a result of swimming pool toys which are not suitable for use in a pool. Some floatation devices can cause young swimmers to flip over and get trapped upside down under the water. Large innertubes or inflatable boats are prime examples of items better suited for the beach.

2) Pool Slides

Swimming pool slides seem like a good idea when you consider children playing in the pool. At the same time, a pool slide is literally like letting your children play on a 9 foot tall ladder overtop of concrete. Pool slides are less and less common these days, and for good reason as they are the second most common cause of serious injury in a swimming pool.

1) Diving Boards

By far the most dangerous element to your swimming pool is the diving board. The vast majority of swimming pools are not deep enough for a diving board. The risk of spinal and head trauma are extremely high in pools less than nine feet deep, which most are. Even a moderately steep dive will cause a collision at the bottom for the swimmer, and the long slope of the pool shallow end is a tricky obstacle to avoid when pulling up from the dive. Removing the diving board from your pool and encouraging a no diving policy will decrease the likelihood of a swimming pool accident or injury by as much as 50%.

Remember – these swimming pool dangers relate to the average swimmer, but an unused pool can be just as deadly. Be sure to install an automatic swimming pool safety cover to take the single most proactive step towards increasing the safety of your swimming pool.
