Brazil has a coastline that extends nearly all along South America’s Atlantic, but most travelers just hit the two most famous beaches, those of Rio de Janeiro, Ipanema and Copacabana. Travelers who wish to venture outside of Rio to Brazil’s many other beaches, especially those in search of beaches with terrific water sports, like snorkeling, scuba diving, surfing, swimming, and more, should check out Buzios, the peninsula that makes up nearly 25 beaches, located just about 2 hours north of Rio.

Buzios’s unique geography as an outcropping that juts out from the rest of the coastline, about half of Buzios’s beaches are open to the Atlantic currents, and thus good for surfing, and the other half are more quiet, and often more secluded.

Most people – locals and travlers alike – head for Ossos, the beach that is closest to the central part of town and the one that offers great tanning and soccer on the shore, as well as surfing. Often celebrities can be seen playing soccer or surfing at Ossos.

One of the best ways to appreciate fully Buzios’s beauty is to take a catamaran tour around the peninsula. The tour stops in several places, allowing those who are water-prone to dive into the clear waters and explore the colorful reefs. There are also islands near the mainland, many of which are not inhabited or barely inhabited. One of the best islands for diving is João Fernandinho, where monkfish, jewfish, anchovies, and barracudas live. On a tour, both veterans and beginners can dive, as each diver is given all equipment, instruction, and a professional guide.

Devoted surfers should check out Geribá. Tucuns beach is very quiet and remote – hardly anyone goes there. There are slim to no amentities, not even lifeguards, but occasionally surfer schools and kiteboard learners launch from the shores. For those who want calmer waters, Canto, Ferradura, and Canto Geribá are good bets. From Canto, it’s enjoyable to order a coffee or snack at a beachside café and watch the sun go down over the water.

French Polynesia is much famed across the globe as a South Sea Paradise, but the water surrounding the Bora Bora is incomparable even by the Tahitian values. Located about 255 km north-west of Tahiti and just about 50 minutes flight from Tahiti, the airport in Bora Bora is on a motu, from where you are required to take a boat to your accommodation place, which in turn is a great experience and makes you feel that you have truly landed on a paradise. Surrounded by a barrier reef, the island is noted for its incredible lagoon within which lie many small islets or motus.

A plenty of options are available to enjoy the neon-blue waters of Bora Bora. The majestic, tranquil beaches found here even surpass well-maintained pools. In fact, majority of the hotels and resorts in the region do not even provide swimming pools, since one to have would be just redundant. Hence, it is evident from this that Bora Bora provides superb options to experience a variety of activities, with its shimmering water filled with marine plant life and tropical fish. From parasailing and windsurfing to canoe and paddle boating, it is just a matter of naming it.

Of the activities that can be enjoyed in Bora Bora, perhaps the most popular is scuba diving. Its stunning lagoon boasts of huge manta ray. In deed, this makes it popular among the divers. However, marine life that can be seen in Bora Bora is not just Manta Rays, but beyond that and include such marine species as lemon sharks, gray sharks, turtles, moray eels, and schools of barracuda.

To swim along with these beautiful creatures is really a memorable experience. Further, since there is no current in the island, it caters to divers of all levels, with dive locations inside the lagoons for novice and more advanced ones outside the reefs. Some of the most popular diving sites in Bora Bora are Aito, Anau, Tapu, Muri Muri, Teavanui Pass, and Tupitipiti.

Snorkeling is another popular water activity that can be enjoyed in the island. Today, many of the resorts and hotels in the region provide excellent options for snorkeling. Coral Gardens on the southern tip of the Motu Roa is regarded as one of the best destinations in the island for enjoying snorkeling. Snorkeling would be a great experience for honeymooners and other vacationers staying in an overwater bungalow in the island.

Also, while at your stay at Bora Bora, enjoy such activities as deep sea fishing. A lot number of boat charters and other service providers are in the scenario for a great fishing experience. In most cases, they provide the expert services of guide who help you in catching a variety of fish species including Blue Marlin, Wahoo, Yellowfin Tuna, Jacks, Mahi Mahi, Skipjack Tuna, Trevally, and Barracuda. Today, majority of the hotels and resorts in the island provide excellent opportunities to enjoy a variety of activities in the island, along with accommodation, dining, and other facilities like spa. Some even have private islands to offer its guest ultimate privacy while others provide facilities for these activities as a part of a package. In most cases, equipments for water sport activities are supplied for free. Despite hotels, many other service providers such as charter boats and yacht providers are also in the scenario to make your holidays in Tahiti truly special and memorable.

Triathlon Tips – Improve Open Water Swimming

Swimming in the open sea is more challenging compare to swimming in a swimming pool. As such it is important you practice your open water swimming in the sea else you will be wasting your effort.

First of all when doing open water swimming you will notice that the water is saltier compare to the water in the swimming pool. Not only will salt water taste bad but it can really hurt your eyes if you allowed the water to get to them. So remember to protect your eyes with a good goggle else you will have a tough time doing open water swimming.

The next challenge you will face when doing open water swimming is the forces of nature like water current, wave and wind. Unlike swimming pool where water current is controlled and the area is smaller, swimming in the sea can be very difficult if you are used to a controlled environment. That is why it is very important to practice swimming in the sea so that you are more adapt to the environment. Another benefit when practice in the sea is that the area is so much bigger compare to the swimming pool which makes your laps longer which is more suitable for a triathlon race.

Water temperature is another obstacle that you will need to overcome. Typically sea water is usually colder compare to swimming pool water. If you are afraid of cold water then now is the best time to practice by taking cold showers to help your body to get used to it. If not your open water swimming performance will be affected greatly because you will constantly have to fight the freezing sensation. I highly recommend that you wear a good swimming suit as it will help with the cold temperature. Do a good warm up is also a great idea so that your body is prepared for the task ahead.

Getting a group of friends to do open water swimming has a lot of benefits as well. Not only will it help you with training but it can make your life much safer. When swimming in the sea you must be prepared for a lot of unexpected events and sometimes having a friend around can save your life. As for practice you can compete with your friends to make your practice a more joyful one rather than swimming alone. With your friends around you can practice overtaking when doing open water swimming as well. You have to remember that triathlon swimming is not limited to a single lane for each swimmer. There is no lane and only a finishing line and when you want to overtake someone in front of you, you must know how to shift your swimming direction to go pass your competitor. Not only that you have to deal with the water current that is cause by your competitor in front of you.

The last and most important thing of all is practice, practice and practice and you will be good at it. Open water swimming takes time to get used to because it is not a controlled environment like a swimming pool.

Life jackets, or live vests, must be used with most all water sports to be participating safely. This is true for everything from wakeboarding to wake surfing. There is always the potential danger of hitting your head and becoming unconscious. The personal flotation device (pfd) you have on could mean life or death in certain situations. One of the great things about most wakeboarding vests is they are made to contour the body more and in turn are much more comfortable and less bulky than most traditional life vests.

Many people who enjoy the sport of wake surfing love using a lightweight wakeboard vest instead of a typical bulky life vest. For those that don’t know, wake surfing is done by driving the boat very slow (around 10mph) in order to put off a very large wake. Typically the weight will be distributed towards one side in order to create an even bigger wave on the side of the boat that the rider will be surfing. A wake surfboard looks a lot like a miniature ocean surf board. The wake surfer starts by holding it against their feet as the boat pulls them out of the water, no bindings needed! The rope that is used is only about 10 ft long so the surfer ends up right behind the boat in the meat of the big wave.

Once the surfer is up and riding, they enter the side of the wake and start surfing, just like they were in the ocean. Once you really get a hang of this sport, you can actually throw the rope back into the boat, but continue surfing because of the forces of the wave! Many wake surfers like to have a the lightest possible wakeboarding vest when riding a wave. This is due simply to the fact that it is a super chill sport and the less weight and bulkiness, the better. It would be extremely difficult to knock yourself out while surfing, so flotation is not a huge concern.

Kitesurfing is the new buzz in extreme water sports. It is a hybrid sport that combines kiting and surfing for the adrenalin junkies. Kitesurfing is already popular in well known beaches around the world. Thrill seekers can enjoy the technical and dangerous manoeuvres of kitesurfing while splitting through ocean waves at high speeds guided by the gusty winds. This sport includes such manoeuvres as wakestyling, freestyling, waveriding, jumping, cruising and freeriding.

For such dangerous extreme sport like kitesurfing, safety becomes an obvious concern.

Here, we will learn about the kitesurfing gear that is mandatory for a thrilling yet safe ride.

Kitesurfing equipment:

Kitesurfing is an extreme sport and like any other has specialized kitesurfing or kitesurfing equipment that are considered mandatory for maximum safety as well as excitement.

1. Kites – this is the main source of flight and control and is available in 2 varieties,

a. Leading edge inflatable kites – also known as inflatables, LEI kites or C-kites, are the most popular and typically made from ripstop nylon with an inflatable plastic bladder, which give the kite its shape and also keeps the kite floating in the water. LEI’s show a quick and direct response to the rider’s manoeuvres.

b. Foil kites – These are arc shaped, similar to a paraglider, and are mostly made of ripstop nylon fabric with air pockets that gives it lift and a fixed bridle to maintain the kite’s shape. The foil kites main advantage over LEIs is that they don’t have manually inflatable bladder, which saves time.

2. Flying lines – are made with ultra high molecular weight polyethylene These lines connect the rider’s control bar to the kite and hence are core equipment. Most kites use 4 or 5 lines.

3. Control bar – is a light weight compound metal bar that is attached to the rider’s end of flying lines. It is used to control the kite by pulling at its ends that causes the kite to manoeuvre clockwise or counter-clockwise.

4. Kite harness – is connected to the rider’s control bar. The harness takes most of the kite’s pull off the rider’s shoulders while surfing and allows the rider to do jumps and other tricks while remaining attached to the kite via the control bar.

5. Kiteboard – is a small light weight board made of a composite material or wood or foam. The rider’s feet can be firmly strapped on to this board for surfing. There are directional surf-style boards, wakeboard-style boards and skim-type boards.

6. Wetsuit – is a part of the protective gear worn by the kitesurfers which aides in reducing the body loss of heat whiles surfing.

7. Safety hook knife – a corrosion resistant stainless-steel blade that can be used in emergency situations such as failure of the kite’s safety release system or to cut entangled or snagged kite lines.

8. Helmet – an obvious compulsory kitesurfing equipment to protect the kitesurfer from any head trauma in case of any mishap.

A growing trend in the spa industry is the swim spas. These are especially popular among homeowners who do not have the space for a large enough swimming pool for swimming laps but have always wanted to have the ability to exercise in the water. Swim spas take up very little room and allow you to be able to swim against the currents of the spa in order to get the full benefit of swimming. And because you can constantly swim against the jets in the spa, you will not need to turn around and swim back like with a regular swimming pool. For these reasons, swimming in a swim spa provides an ideal workout environment that will take up very little room in the home or the yard.

Swim spas are not only meant for exercise, on contrary, they can be used for fun and entertainment, just like a regular pool or hot tub, or just relaxing. With some of the swim spa, models available, you can elect to have a hot tub on one end of the spa and a swimming area on the other, which makes it easy to enjoy either relaxing or exercising, or allows one person to exercise while the other lounges around. With a swim spa, you can enjoy a nice warm dip or exercise to your heart’s content because it combines the two. The hot tub portion is pretty much just like any other typical hot tub spa; it’s great for steaming on a chilly fall evening or a cool spring afternoon are not pretty much anytime of the year.

The swimming part of a swim spa is what makes it uniquely different than a hot tub alone, however. Internal turbines power the part in which you can swim; these generate a current that you swim against as you would swim against a tide in the ocean giving you optimal exercise every time you go for a swim. A swim spa can combine all the wonderful, healthful properties of swimming that a lake, ocean, or pool can as well as those of a spa in which you can relieve yourself of the stresses of your day.

Cayman Islands – Like Water Sports, But Hate Diving Or Snorkelling?

The Cayman Islands are well known for the outstanding dive sites and clear waters, but what if this doesn’t interest you? Well there are plenty of other water sports that you can take part in. John Guinn, the Cayman Islands Specialist at Holiday Hut lists his top nine.

Parasailing

When parasailing (also know as parascending) you are attached to a specially designed parachute, or parasail, and to a boat. The forward movement of the boat causes the parachute to rise and you are lifted up in the air. If the boat has enough power, then two or three people can share the same parachute.

Jet Ski

Jet Ski is a brand name, but in the same way that all spa baths are Jacuzzis and all vacuum cleaners are Hoovers, any personal watercraft that relies on a petrol powered engine and acts like a motorbike is know as a Jet Ski.

Jet skiing is fantastic fun, after a brief introduction you could be powering across the water on your own, or even going on a Jet Ski Safari to Stingray City. Just try not to think about the fact that they don’t have brakes!

Kiteboarding/Kitesurfing

Simple to explain, but difficult to master, a kiteboarder has his feet strapped to a board, while holding onto a large kite. The kite is used to propel the kiteboarder across the water. Both the board and the kite have to be controller to enable the kiteboarder to move and to do stunts. The Cayman Islands have a warm steady wind year round, making it the ideal place to learn to Kiteboard.

Windsurfing

Once called ‘surfing’s ginger haired cousin’ by the traditional surfers, windsurfing has become very popular, and until recently windsurfers were able to travel on waves that were too large for tradition surfing. A windsurf board is similar to a surfboard, but has a large sail, with a boon attached to it. Similar stunts to those performed by kiteboarders are possible. The best place to windsurf on Grand Cayman is near a flat water reef at East End. Speak to local guides if you want a more challenging surf.

Wakeboarding

When wakeboarding you are towed along by a motorboat while your feet are strapped to a wakeboard. It is a combination of water skiing, snowboarding and surfing.

Wakesurfing

A surfer is pulled along by the same type of boat that is used in wakeboarding, except the surfer releases the two rope and surfs the wake produced by the boat in a similar manner as normal surfing.

Surfing

Not a sport that you would associate with the calm Caribbean Sea, but at certain times of the year it is possible to have some challenging waves around he Cayman Islands. The Hurricane Season particularly August and September can see large swells due to nearby hurricanes and tropical storms. Although you could go weeks without a decent wave.

Sailing

Although off the beaten track, the Cayman Islands have excellent waters in which to sail. Despite the generally calm waters, there are hidden dangers with the many coral reefs around the islands, so care should be taken. Also these reefs make excellent places to stop and admire the underwater life (following the strict laws about mooring, or course). It is probably best to avoid the hurricane season as the rains and winds can make sailing difficult. If you don’t have your own boat, local companies have group sailings, or you could charter your own yacht along with a crew.

Kayaks

Sometimes called a canoe in error, a kayak differs from a canoe in that it has a closed paddling area. Also in a kayak you sit on a seat directly on the bottom of the boat and your legs are extended in front of you, but in a canoe you either kneel or sit on a elevated seat.

You can either kayak along the beach near your hotel, or for a magical experience you could go on a guided Eco-Tour around Grand Cayman and get a better understanding of the natural hidden beauty of the Cayman Islands.
