Water Sports and Surfing in California

Water Sports and Surfing in California

With its fabulous, year-round warm climate, California has been synonymous with surfing and the sporty, tanned, blonde-haired types who have participated in the sport since the 1960s. As such, you’d be hard pressed to find somewhere better to go if you want to ride the best waves! The undisputed hotbed of surfing in California is San Diego – the state’s second largest city. Here, you’ll find fantastic Pacific beaches with facilities specifically designed for surfers and other water sports users, as well as some of the biggest waves that the Pacific has to offer.

Home to several of the surfing industry’s biggest manufacturers and famous pro surfer Rob Machado, the city’s hottest surfing beaches can be found at Black’s Beach, Swamis, Windansea and, of course, at San Diego’s biggest beach: Mission Bay. Attracting millions of visitors each year, San Diego’s beaches are packed with surfers eager to ride the waves; and on the days when the surf isn’t up to par, you’ll be able to participate in other exciting water sports – such as water-skiing, jet skiing and paragliding.

Instruction in all water sports disciplines is available at Mission Bay Beach, with some of the biggest and best water sports schools to be found there. Just beyond the beach there is a massive park that offers other recreational activities, such as volleyball and basketball; but with plenty of picnic areas and outdoor barbeques, this park quickly fills up during the summer months, so sun-lovers must get there early to secure their spot!

Many of the best hotels in San Diego are also found in the Mission Bay Beach area, which – at only six miles from the international airport – is convenient to reach and also serves as a great base from which to explore the city and its surroundings.

As California’s second largest city you’ll find there is much to do in San Diego when you’re not surfing, swimming or generally splashing around in the sea; you’ll be able to visit everything from some of California’s best art museums to local zoos! The San Diego Museum of Art, the Museum of Man and the Natural History Museum are all popular attractions and are all found in the picturesque Balboa Park, along with the Museum of Photographic Arts.

Other cultural highlights include local theatres, opera and the San Diego Symphony. The city is also home to two major US sporting franchises: the NFL’s Chargers and the Padres, a popular Major League Baseball team. If none of those alternative attractions or activities tickle your fancy, how about trying the impressive San Diego Zoo, Seaworld, the Wild Animal Park, or even the theme park at Legoland?

Whatever attracts you to San Diego, whether it’s sun, sand, surf or the sights, you’ll be warmly welcomed by friendly locals, who will do all they can to help you enjoy your holiday.

Swimming Fitness Motivation ? How To Never Talk Yourself Out Of A Workout

Swimming Fitness Motivation ? How To Never Talk Yourself Out Of A Workout

For those of us who choose swimming as a way to maintain a healthy fitness level, motivation to get to the pool doesn’t always come easy. As with any sport consistency is what creates results, and swimming is no different.

If you are determined to get back into great physical shape, and really live a healthy lifestyle, the first thing you need to do is create a set of goals. Figure out what you want to accomplish and where you want to be in a month, 3 months from now, and 6 months from now. Once you have those goals in place, figure out what you need to do on a daily basis to reach those goals.

This is the easy part and it seems so simple its almost common sense, BUT sticking to your guns and actually achieving your goals is really the hard part. That’s where people most often fall short.

So here’s what you need to do to make sure you reach the goals you set for yourself. Create a plan for how often you plan on swimming each week, including the distance you plan on swimming, and let nothing come between you and those workouts. Now obviously certain situations may arise that make it completely impossible to get your swim workout in, but those are usually out of your control. What is in your control are the situations where we just talk ourselves out of working out.

“I don’t like getting up early” “I had such a long work day” “I’M TIRED” “I’m just too stressed out”

If you let your mind make up excuses, you’ll find that you easily talk yourself out of going for a swim. When I first got back in the water, I found myself doing this all of the time until I finally took a stand. I decided I was going to get at least 4 swim workouts in each week and I just made it happen.

If I had a long day at work, I told myself I had no choice and not going wasn’t an option. When I had a stressful day or two, I took that built up stressful energy and I used it to have a great swim workout. Those “stressed filled days” are the best days to workout because you’ll have more energy than you can possibly imagine, and afterwards you’re mind and body will feel clear, centered and at peace.

It’s really a great feeling when YOU are in control of your mind and body; amazing things can start to happen. Be aware of your mind & thoughts, and stay focused on your goals. All of the pieces of the puzzle will fall into place once you accomplish that.

Tips For Building Your Swimming Endurance & Stamina With Good Swimming Technique

Tips For Building Your Swimming Endurance & Stamina With Good Swimming Technique

One of the first things I noticed when I got back in the pool after my 7 year hiatus is that most aspects of my swimming technique were still in tact, but my endurance was just pitiful. I felt great for the first 200-300 yards, but then I just couldn’t move my arms. They were like bricks, fighting as hard as they could to abide by the law of gravity, and bring my out of shape ass to the bottom of the pool.

I fought through that initial stage and took baby steps, 100 yards at a time, eventually completing an actual workout. Once I got through those first few painful workouts, it was time to actually work on building my endurance to a manageable level.

In order to get myself over the 2,000 yd workout hurdle, I had to really focus on every aspect of my swimming workouts. When I did that, I found that there are really two keys to building your swimming endurance…

1. Good Swimming Technique

2. Swim Workout Consistency

The first thing that I noticed happen as I was getting tired in my workouts was that my technique would just fall apart. In freestyle, my strokes would get short and choppy. My head position would be all over the place. Just really sloppy and I’m kind of surprised the lifeguard didn’t jump in and try to save me. Kidding, but in all seriousness it was really having an adverse effect on my ability to complete my workouts.

I eventually caught on to what was going on and I focused 100% on my swimming technique. Long strokes, pulling all the way through, elbows bent on the recovery, and a solid head position. I started my workouts like that, and as I started to get tired I kept that focus. I guarantee if you do that, good swimming technique will become second nature and your endurance will naturally build.

The second aspect of this little endurance equation is really a no-brainer. You HAVE to be consistent to build any sort of stamina in the pool. Set a schedule for yourself, whether you swim 3x or 7x per week, and stick to it. If you are all over the place and missing a week or more at a time, you can’t realistically expect to build any sort of endurance. Also, make sure your workout distances are similar from workout to workout and that you build those distances as each week progresses.

Good Luck!

Water Sports in the Caribbean

Water Sports in the Caribbean

The Caribbean islands are the best place for people who enjoy water sports. Whether your own preference is on the water or below it, Caribbean water sports have something to offer you including swimming, waterskiing, sailing, snorkeling, kayaking, and so on.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is probably the most popular of Caribbean watersports because swimmers of all ages can enjoy it. Going snorkeling means getting personal with the wonderful and colorful marine life found in the Caribbean. Due to the immense popularity of this activity, there are many well-marked snorkeling trails across many islands in the Caribbean. Most of the better resorts and hotels in offer snorkeling equipment as well as instruction.

Board watersports

Windsurfing, surfing, and kiteboarding are all forms of board sports. These Caribbean watersports enjoy a lot of popularity because the trade winds in the Caribbean provide unlimited opportunities for them. Kiteboarding is actually the same as windsurfing except that it uses a relatively smaller board. As to surfing, if you are not going to Hawaii then you had better go to the Caribbean. The water is warm, the surf is good, the bays are sheltered and there is always one trade wind or another making waves, what more could you possibly demand? Due to the combination of ideal conditions, the Caribbean attracts surfers from the world over. Instruction and equipment is available through most hotels or through vendors along the beaches.

Parasailing

If you are not the type for on-water or below-water sports then you have this third option among Caribbean watersports. Facilities for training and equipment are available through your hotel or through vendors along the beach. Going parasailing means getting a unique view of the Caribbean with the whole vista of white beaches, clear waters, blue skies, and the wildlife spread below you as you soar on the wind.

Waterskiing

Waterskiing or jetskiing has become quite popular recently. Jetskiing is especially very convenient with many people renting jetskis for a single rider experience or wave runners that can take on 2-4 riders at one time. As usual, your hotel or the beach front can offer you the vendors for this Caribbean watersport.

Canoeing and Kayaking

There are several guided tours for people who prefer the calm and tranquility of canoeing or kayaking to the other motorized means of traveling on water. The Caribbean is liberally supplied with mangroves and lagoons.

Sailing

Spend a day on a powerboat, catamaran, sailboat, or trimraran and enjoy sailing in the Caribbean. You can opt between bare boat and crewed boats and there are even special charters for people who are interested in learning how to sail.

Scuba Diving

If you wish to go a step beyond snorkeling then go scuba diving and you will see yet another unique perspective of the Caribbean. There are several popular diving spots in the Cayman Islands and Curacao. Go swimming with tamed stingrays in Stingray City. Do not forget the Buck Island Reef National Monument that has 250 species of fish.

Why You Need More Challenging Swim Workouts In Your Life

Why You Need More Challenging Swim Workouts In Your Life

Unless you swam competitively in the past, you may not know exactly how to create challenging swim workouts. The vast majority of recreational swimmers that I see when I head to the pool for a workout tend to “just swim.”

Just the other day I was talking with a woman who wanted to share my lane with me, and she said “Don’t worry I just swim until I can’t anymore…” She had no plan of action or workout planned, and that just seemed crazy to me. I easily get bored when I don’t have a planned workout to do, and in turn I’ll swim less and I certainly won’t push myself.

Who knows, maybe some people like to just swim laps aimlessly until they are tired or bored, but if you are like me, you enjoy the challenge of good swim workouts. You have a goal, purpose and a MISSION when you go to the pool now. Not only do you want to finish the workout, you want to beat that workout into submission so you can move on to the next challenge. When you look at swimming like that, you are bound to become a better swimmer and naturally be in great physical shape.

The basic components of good swim workouts are the warm up, pre-set, main set, and cooldown. The pre-set is not a necessity if you are doing shorter workouts (<3,000 yards), but it is a great tool I use to get my heart rate up for the main set. As far as the yardage breakdown, I’d recommend 20-25% be allocated to the warm-up, 60-75% allocated to the pre & main sets with the remainder for the cooldown.

Make sure you vary the type of swim workouts and sets that you are using so that you become a well-rounded swimmer. Focusing on only the strokes you know (or like) won’t cut it. Make sure you include some sets for the strokes you need the most work on. That’s literally the only way you will improve in those strokes. Practice makes perfect, and a great way to get a lot of practice with each stroke is to include Individual Medley (IM) sets in some of your workouts.

Lastly, using equipment is a great way to break up your workouts so that you’re not just straight swimming the entire time. I like to include a kicking set in both the warm up and main set because it gives my shoulders a short break. If you are good at kicking with a board, you may not need to use fins though you certainly can if you’d like. The advantages of using fins are that you get some extra resistance while you’re kicking and you can complete more distance in a shorter period of time.

There’s a lot more that goes into writing challenging swim workouts, but don’t worry, we’ve done all the hard work for you @ Virtual Swim Coach. Make sure you check us out at the links below!

The Key Aspects Of Good Swim Workouts

The Key Aspects Of Good Swim Workouts

Creating effective swim workouts is really not that difficult, but there are a few pieces to the puzzle that must be included.

The first thing you need to do is establish how much time you have for each of your swim workouts. I feel like the average swimmer tends to swim between 45min and 75min in each workout. Anything less than 30min won’t be very effective, and with workouts over 90min, you need to have a lot of time on your hands AND be in phenomenal shape.

Once you establish your time range it should be relatively easy to gauge the distance. I used to swim competitively, and though I’ve been out of the water for some years now, I can still keep a pace of under 2:00 / 100 yards for the entire workout. So, if I have an hour to swim I can usually get in a little over 3,000 yards. Once I get back into really good shape, I’m capable of closer to 5,000 yards in an hour, but that’s REALLY cruising. What you need to do is figure out how much you can swim in an hour, then it’s pretty easy to structure a workout from there.

The Warm Up

I tend to keep my warm-ups between 20-25% of the total yardage for that swim workout. This usually consists of a longer swim to start, then some shorter kicking, drills, and short sprints to get my heart rate going. I’ll also base my warm-up on what I plan on doing for the main set. If I’m doing more distance freestyle, I’ll have more freestyle in the warm-up. If I’m going for a stroke based main set, I’ll put some stroke drills and maybe some IM sets in the warm-up.

The Pre-Set (optional especially for shorter workouts)

I use the pre-set especially in my longer workouts and also in workouts where the main set is very fast. Its perfect for a build up to that tough main set and you can really get your heart rate exactly where you want it if you do this right.

The Main Set

Yardage for the pre-set if I have one plus the main set usually equals 60-70% of the total yardage for that swim workout. Within this set I like to have descending sets or negative split long swims. I’ll also keep the intervals tight so that I’m not getting much rest in between each set. You can really build up your endurance by designing your main sets like this. Don’t be afraid to be uncomfortable during your main sets. If you are “comfortable” throughout the entire workout, then you aren’t pushing yourself enough and you need to crank it up a notch or two. Also make sure you alternate between freestyle and stroke for your main sets BUT stay consistent with one overall theme throughout the entire workout.

The Warm-down

The warm-down should be the shortest part of your swim workout, and is really just there to help you get rid of some of that lactic acid build up. Just like if you went for a run, you would want to walk it off for a few minutes. Make sure you do at least 200 yards of freestyle/backstroke mix, or even just kicking on your back.

If you want to get some pre-made & professionally designed workouts that are ready to bring to the pool, check out the links below!

All boats and rafts should also carry extra life jackets, whistle and lifebuoys. Water sports need to be accompanies by an adult who must know how to swim, preferable accompanied by an attentive lifeguard. He should also know what to do during times of emergency and A B Cs of giving first aid. Water sports should always be carried out, when the climate is pleasant. If the climate is sunny, do apply sun screen cream to protect yourself from radiations.

There are different kinds of water sports for children, some are for pleasure and some are very adventurous and exciting. Let’s start with a simple water sport like boating, which is very much enjoyable. In most of the kids and youths camps you’ll find boating and canoeing. Swimming Pool Contractors provides a Fun Back Yard Play Ground

Swimming Pool Contractors provides a Fun Back Yard Play Ground

Swimming Pool Contractors
Each year, thousands of folk select to improve their properties and homes with non-public swimming pool access. The idea of owning one’s own back yard swimming pool is a dream for many people, stuffed with options and choices to make. One of the most important decisions that a person will make when deciding to install a pool is the swimming pool contractor.

When taking a look at swimming pool contractors, there are several questions that should get asked before starting a project. A good swimming pool contractor should have testimonials and experience that reflect good client service and quality work. In principle that implies that after you put water in it, it should stay there. In reality there are far more factors at work here than this.

Before moving past evaporation though you can simply measure the water loss differential between evaporation and water loss through any other means efficiently. Employing a bucket or similar water-proof and translucent container, Swimming Pool Contractors sit the container on a step or improvised secure platform so that you can fill the bucket to the same water level as the water which surrounds it. Use pool water in the bucket to match the temperature and chemical content of the water for perfect results.

Swimming pool contractors are in a risky sort of work, as property damage can happen in the pool installation process. he should have correct insurance for damages to the property, together with a legal permit for the pool installation too. Without these 2 things, the installation process can be much costlier than the original guesses project. For example, arguably the best swimming pools on the planet are built with concrete. I suspect so, but other swimming pool contractors might have differing opinions so to be fair, arguably the best swimming pools on the planet are made with concrete.

So if water can leak out of a swimming pool under acceptable circumstances, at what point is the leak said to be the problem? The bad news is that when a swimming pool leak has progressed to the point where the average owner notices the water loss, the problem requires immediate attention. Leaking water from your pool unacceptably may cause far too many new Problems to remotely consider ignoring the leak.

The price should include everything up front, with no concealed fees or additions to be stunned with later. Also, the Swimming Pool Contractors should offer a company guaranty in writing with clear laws and expiry dates.
A pool that loses water more quickly than from evaporation alone requires attention and likely a sequence of leak detection tests.
